Edinburgh Fringe Festival Review: Fascinating Aïda, Jeff Leach & Shanghai Jinshan Student Art Troupe

The UK is famous at this time of the year because of not just the Olympics, but because the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is happening! It is the LARGEST arts festival in the world and is going on between 3rd August – 27th August 2012. Either it being comedy, theatre or music shows for free or for a fee – there’s something for everyone of all ages!

Tickets are easy to purchase online and then just pick them up at the Fringe Festival Box Office on the Royal Mile! Visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival official website for the shows & prices HERE! The festival has venues in different areas (but all in the centre of Edinburgh) so it’s not just one big overcrowded tent. In fact, this happens to be one of the venues and it’s called the…UDDERBELLY 😀 You’ll see why:

Edinburgh Fringe Festival Venue: Udderbelly (outside the University of Edinburgh’s Student Union)

Hahaha! How can you NOT laugh at a purple cow with its udder facing the sky?? Perfect venue for a comedy festival! It’s just hilarious when you have the volunteers telling you that the show will be at the “Udderbelly” in a perfectly straight face. I’d be laughing the whole time! 😀

Of all my years in the UK, I’ve never had the opportunity to visit the Fringe Festival but I am now very happy to have been able to! So far I have been thoroughly entertained with the 3 shows I managed to catch (2 last weekend).

Fascinating Aïda

Thoughts:

  • I LOVED them! I remember watching them on Youtube years ago because of their famous musical comedy hit “Cheap Flights”. If you’ve not watched it, watch it here! You’ll understand the pains of the consequences of getting cheap flights.
  • The 3 singers were a hilarious bunch, playing with the crowd and have fantastic voices!
  • If you like comedy in the form of singing, do watch!
  • It was a full crowd which wasn’t surprising, and the moment when the ladies were starting their “Cheap Flights” song, the lady behind me couldn’t stop snorting in laughter the whole time! It was hilarious!

Details:

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Price: Either £13.50 or £14.50
  • Venue: Gilded Balloon Teviot (in the Student’s Union)
  • They are performing until the 26th of August 2012

Jeff Leach: Boyfriend Experience

After Fascinating Aïda we wandered around the Udderbelly (haha!) to look for more shows and don’t worry – lots of volunteers come up to you giving flyers for shows and a little summary of what to expect. Jeff Leach was one of them, and we decided to go for his show. My significant other googled his show on his phone and found that the ratings were low but were they…?

Thoughts:

  • I enjoyed his show! (and so did the other) 😀
  • He was unabashed about his previous ‘very active’ sex life (had sex with more than 300 people – and no, not just women) and him being diagnosed as a sex addict (eg. Tiger Woods, Usher, etc.). His honesty and openness was very refreshing and it made the intimate crowd engage with him on a more personal level (haha).
  • I was hoping he’d be coming out in a chastity belt but he didn’t disappoint with tight pants, sleeveless tight unbuttoned shirt and lots of fierce ‘ring party’ (can I have some please?). Topped with a great smile and non-stop hilarious chatter, Jeff Leach had everyone in stitches most of the time.
  • His show circles around whether he is ‘boyfriend’ material with such a promiscuous background. And yes, he has finally settled down with a lovely lady but he didn’t tell us in detail how he managed to get to that point of committal. The reason for the lack of detail must be because he was easily distracted by the crowd to banter with (not saying this is a bad thing)! For example: For the guy who said that “cookies are not bright” in regard to Jeff Leach’s “not the brightest cookie in the jar” saying – it just wasted a few good minutes to think of a better saying! However Jeff Leach was very gracious in receiving comments, so all was good 🙂

There were a lot of hilarious moments and I am very sure it changes in every show, so go check Jeff Leach out at the festival!

Details:

  • Price: £8 or £9.50
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Venue: Gilded Balloon Teviot (in the Student’s Union)

Shanghai Jinshan Student Art Troupe

I watched this last night, as the lovely waiter at a coffee place gave me free tickets to watch this show (the show is free). Why not watch, right? This is their last show in Edinburgh after a week 😦

Thoughts:

  • The students from the performing arts troupe were so multi-talented, showcasing their skills in dance, music and opera. There was also calligraphy and paper-cutting which was very interesting!
  • I felt more knowledgeable about Shanghai (and China) from their 1-hour performance, and they had such great costumes!
  • There was this particular ‘Romeo & Juliet’ dance which was quite breathtaking and it gave me goosebumps… 🙂

So all in all, I’m having a great experience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012! I am eyeing a few acts to watch which include:

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is definitely a go-to if you are here, and if you aren’t – it’s always on every summer 😀
